Whip butter with sugar until creamy. Add flour, baking powder, cinnamon, clove and salt. Mix well and add eggs, one at a time. Carefully add apple slices, reserving some for later.
Transfer mixture to a previously greased and floured cake pan.
Arrange reserved apple slices on top. Sprinkle extra sugar on top and bake in preheated moderate oven to 350°F (180°C). When cake is almost ready, pour syrup over cake and continue baking until it is ready.
Syrup: Place sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook for 6 to 8 minutes.
