The plant, a native of elevated valleys in the Andes was widely grown during the Inca Empire at the time of the Spanish conquest. It was taken to Europe by the Spaniards about 1580 to 1585, then by the English at the time of Sir Walter Raleigh and perhaps by Sir Francis Drake in 1586. It now ranks next to Indian corn as Americas most important contribution to the worlds food plants. |
