Lucuma: exotic and Peruvian
Peru has given the world many outstanding products. Peruvian dishes and desserts are very attractive because of its rich soil and its expertly combined ingredients.
The Lucumo
is a rough tree with thick green leaves which grows naturally in the Andean valleys of Peru. Its fruit has greenish/brown skin with yellow/orange flesh, soft and sweet.
It is processed like flour (
lucuma
flour) in order to satisfy the markets during the seasons when it is not available as fresh fruit. As flour, it is easily canned and exported. It is mainly used to make ice creams, shakes and desserts, usually combined with milk.
The
Lucuma
has medical properties as well, and is recommended in depression cases, due to its high content of vitamin B1, Tiamine and Niacine.
